Whiplash Ending - A short Analysis

A film about torment, redemption and perfection. Andrew pushes himself and breaks his mental stability to exceed the expectation of his tyrannical mentor Terence Fletcher.

The primary setting of Whiplash is the fictional prestigious music school, Shaffer Conservatory in New York. The narrative focuses on an inspiring jazz drummer, following his journey to become one of the greatest, while continuously overcoming humiliation by Fletcher.

I chose this scene due to the emotional response it evokes, it’s a highly intense scene, which brings the film to a perfect climax. I also chose this because of the controversial opinions of this ending, is it tragic or happy? It successfully shows that Andrew has finally elevated to the level of perfection to become great, and that he has experienced the sacrifices, dedication and pain that it takes to get there. Not only that, but this scene effectively uses cinematography and sound design to convey intense emotions. Sharone Meir, the cinematographer, uses an array of camera techniques, from rapid cuts and tracking shots, used to show the focus that Andrew has, but also to mirror his intense energy. The scene is shot with a golden, warm filter, representing the passion that is going into this piece of music, but also to convey Fletcher’s admiration that he has finally found someone who understands what it takes to be the best . While the sound design is used to adequately build tension unknowingly, as the camera cuts faster and the music gets louder, the intensity keeps climbing.
